Clogged Defrost Drain

One of the main reasons for refrigerator leaks is a blocked defrost drain. When this drain becomes clogged with food particles and debris, it can cause ice to form and this will cause any future runoff water to flow out your fridge from various other gaps. So, instead of the water draining through the pipe and into the pan underneath your fridge, it will flow into your fridge along the path of least resistance. In most cases, as more and more water builds up in the fridge, it will start to leak out the door and run all the way down to the floor.

To fix this problem, you will need to flush the drain from the inside. Use warm, not hot, water and something like a turkey baster to get the water directly into the pipe. Another option is to use a pipe cleaner or something similar to remove the clog. Do so gently so that you do not damage the pipe in the process.

If this does not do the trick, you should check the valve at the end of the refrigerator drain hose. This will require moving the fridge so that you can access the valve at the back of the appliance. There should be a rubber check valve which helps regulate humidity. However, it can become clogged so you will need to remove it and clean it out with soap and hot water.

Clogged Water Supply

Another possible cause of a fridge leak is a frozen water supply line. If you have a water dispenser or ice maker, the hose that supplies this dispenser could have become frozen. When not in use, the hose is still filled with water. This means that it is possible for the water in the hose to freeze and water can start to drip beneath the fridge.

The refrigerator needs to be unplugged before you locate the shut-off valve. Inspect the line for any kinks or damage. If cracked or broken, you should have the hose replaced right away. If there is no damage to the water line but you can see a blockage, it could be ice. All you need to do is leave your refrigerator unplugged for 2 hours or so and this should do the trick. If the clog in the tube is not translucent, call an expert since it’s most likely not ice causing the problem.
