Washing Machine Cleaning Tips

You might not use your washing machine on a daily basis, but you most certainly use it at least once a week. Without a washer, your laundry would prove to be an extremely time-consuming task. Not to mention all that back ache from bending over a bucket or the tub. To keep your washer in top condition, it’s important to make sure that you perform adequate maintenance. Regular cleaning will help keep the appliance running for a long time. Here are some washing machine cleaning tips your should know.

Clean the drum

The drum is one of the most important parts of all. It’s best to use the appropriate cleaning detergent to wash the drum and inside of the door. After applying the cleaner to the drum and door, you should allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping it off. This ensures that there won’t be any residue left behind to ruin your clothes. You can also go for a mixture of alcohol or vinegar with some baking soda and rut a hot cycle to sanitize and neutralize the area.

Clean the seal

There is a seal around the door of the washer, and it has a habit of collecting dirt. Pull the seal back and use a clean cloth to wipe all the way around. Bleach can work well to clean off the grime but, if you want a more natural option, you could opt for vinegar instead.

Clean the detergent compartment

Your washer detergent can build up inside the tray even after just a couple of washes. It’s best to clean this tray after doing your laundry so that it doesn’t build up more over time. You will need to remove the tray and soak it in some water. Use a small brush to scrub if need be and, if you like, you can use bleach to prevent mold. Another good tip to remember is to leave the tray open when you’re not using your washer. If you keep it shut, it might start to smell bad.

Clean the lint trap

Like your dryer, your washer also has a lint trap that needs to be cleaned out regularly. This lint trap should become a part of your regular washer cleaning routine.

Washing Machine Cleaning with an Empty Load

Once you are done cleaning your washer, you can run a quick wash cycle to make sure that no detergent is left behind. This also helps flush the drainage pipes so that they don’t get clogged with suds and other particles.

It’s also important to remember that regular cleaning helps prolong the life of your washer, but it does not mean that repairs can be avoided forever.
