The oven is a valuable and often taken-for-granted appliance. You turn the dial to the desired temperature, wait the standard 10 minutes for it to heat up and.. voila! You’re ready to create your culinary masterpiece. But what happens when that perfect temperature starts to drop? Worst-case scenario; you need a new stove. Best case scenario; the problem is a simple fix that you can do yourself.
Before you resign yourself to takeout and microwave cooking because your oven can’t maintain temperature, do a little detecting first. There are some common oven issues that are easy to detect and fix.
If the element is completely disfunctional then it will not heat the oven at all, making this a pretty obvious diagnosis. But it the element is only beginning to malfunction it will often work during the heatup cycle but will not engage again when it needs to to keep the oven at the right temperature. This can happen due to a loose connection or an outright malfunction of the element.
You can check for this visually; if you cannont see the element glowing red then it is not working. Check your owner’s manual to learn the correct element for your type of stove.
The second most common cause of oven failure is a faulty or broken thermostat. If the thermostat cannot read a drop in temperature it cannot tell the element when to come on.
There are two common reasons for a thermostat failure. The first is a malfunction of the oven setting switch. You can find this in the control panel. Use a multimeter to test for proper wire connection.
The second reason could be a faulty sensor probe. The sensor probe is a short rod that juts out and measures oven temperature. This can also be tested with a multimeter.
