It’s Monday morning and all your work clothes are in the washer. Just enough time to dry them and still get to work on time. You open the washer lid and there are all your clothes; soaking in a tub full of water.
The outlook seems dismal. What are your options? Spending your valuable time at the laundromat? Hefty repair bill? New machine? The situation may not be as dire as it looks. There are several common reasons why a washer won’t drain that you can fix yourself.
The most common reasons that your washer won’t drain are easy to check for and correct.
There are several things that can prevent proper drainage. The normal vibrations of the dryer can shift the machine to shift against the wall causing the hose to become constricted or developed a kink. This will restrict water drainage. The hose can also become clogged with articles of small clothing or items left in pockets.
After disconnecting the power supply, place a bucket to catch the water and disconnect the hose. Use a flashlight to look inside the hose for obsructions. After removing whatever is clogging the drain hose, reconnect it and turn the power back on. Turn on the rinse cycle make sure the washer is draining properly.
If the drain hose is not the problem, it may be the pump. Make sure the power supply is disconnected. After finding the pump remove the panel with a screwdriver. Un-attach the pump and take the screen off. Rinse it thoroughly. Make sure nothing is lodged inside the pumps outlet. Check the fan blades to ensure free movement and that none of them are broken or missing. If any of these problems occur you may need a new pump. Unless you are experienced with this type of repair it is advisable to call a professional.
