When your fridge stops working, it is understandably an urgent concern. It is something that will need to be remedied right away and every minute counts. In most cases, your fridge will have at least several perishable items that you need to keep cool. Of course, there are a few things you can do if you want to help your food stay cold inside your broken fridge while waiting for a repair technician.
Firstly, if your fridge and freezer are two separate units, then you will be able to place some frozen items like ice and ice packs in your fridge to help keep the temperature as low as possible. Right now, your fridge will act somewhat like one of those portable cooler boxes, so you need to add frozen items to maintain that temperature. Remember, if you use something like frozen vegetables, you should not refreeze them after they thaw! You should either use them or toss them since it’s not safe to refreeze food.
Once you have removed all of your ice packs and ice from your freezer, you should add more so that the next round has time to freeze. Fill up small bottles with water and place in the freezer. A large bottle will take longer to freeze, and small bottles can be spread out throughout your fridge rather than placed in one spot.
Of course, don’t forget to keep the door shut! Do not open your fridge unless you absolutely have to. Try to keep the temperature in your kitchen as moderate to low as possible. If you start cooking up a storm, your kitchen will get warmer, and this will affect the temperature inside your fridge. The food in your fridge will stay cool for approximately 4 hours. If you add frozen items to your fridge, it will help keep the fridge cool and your food fresh.
In case your fridge and freezer are combined, and both are not working, you could take a moment to inspect all of your food, find out what needs to be kept cold and what you could possibly leave in the fridge. If you have items that need to be cool for longer, move them to the freezer, which is normally a lot cooler. Store vegetables on the top shelf and meats lower down to avoid cross-contamination.
If you notice that perishables like milk, cooked food, and similar food items are warmer than they should be, it is safer to discard them. Eating food that has warmed to room temperature can have some nasty results. Bacteria can form on or in the food, which is bad for your digestive system.
